I've done this. If you have white skin, bring plenty of "gratuity offerings," and be forewarned that the experience will be like Wednesday on the Howdy-Doody Show: "Anything can happen."
While you obviously won't want to register with the embassies of the countries you'll be traveling through, I would investigate the regional advisories on the travel.gov website and plan accordingly.
