Sarah, honestly most people don't have to worry about network adapter tracking via the MAC address (unless you have reason to believe the FBI might be interested in you). Most Internet tracking is done through your IP address (which is assigned by your Internet service provider) and ad-based cookies, which are stored on your computer's hard drive every time you visit any popular website.

But I do strongly recommend the Tails CD for Internet browsing. And never do any banking or other sensitive online activities at a public Wi-Fi hot spot.
And please, no Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc.
