facebook possibilities

Privacy gurus tend to forbid the use of facebook and other social media and networking sites. I have resisted temptation and do not have a facebook, even though it would make it easier to keep up with friends and family (that I know in real life).

I read the facebook chapter in HTBI3, which pertains mainly to youngsters. My question is whether measures can be taken to safely set up and use such sites. For example, use an alias that you only give out to those you trust. Maybe use your real first name (if it's common enough) but falsify the last name and other registration requirements. Don't post pictures and choose a secure password.

Isn't there anyway to have the benefits of social media while avoiding most of the pitfalls?

If you take serious privacy measures, you might be able to get by. Or, use Google to search for alternate services that are more private.
