Canadian Banks

I called Canadian Western and their affiliate Canadian Direct Financial. I was told that they do a credit check of anyone of opens an account. Although I have excellent credit, I do not like this idea. Has anyone been able to open an account in Canada recently without having this done or is there just no problem with allowing them to do this?

I have had American clients open normal non-interest-bearing checking accounts in a Canadian bank. No credit check would have been possible because they gave a passport number but NO a Social Security number.
