Prepaid cards & cell phones
I have searched for a prepaid credit card in Canada. There is the VISA Gift Card, and a few mastercard-related companies such as Mycard. Unfortunately every card I found requires proof of identity. The way they check your identity is by doing a "soft" credit check, meaning they look you up in the credit bureau just to make sure you exist, but they don't actually examine CC payment history etc. I guess for now I will have to go with cash or money orders when I want privacy in purchasing.
... Also, I would like to echo what Elliott said about Virgin cell phones. In Canada as well, you can activate the phone online or over the phone with a fictitious name, and they have never contacted me by the email or alternate phone number that I gave them. And the customer service reps are kind, straightforward people in my experience.

Restraining orders?
I have recently purchased your book due to actions involving my finances. I have so far appreciated the information. My only comment is that of which you mention restraining orders. I work as an officer and wanted to let you know that a restraining order is something that we cannot enforce. It falls more into a civil action. In order to keep someone away from you, an order of protection should be filed. Before I continue I must first stress the severity of an o.o.p. This is not to be taken out in acts of passion because once this is filed there is no reversing the consequences against the person you have taken it out on. An example would be is you and your spouse had an argument and an o.o.p. was filed then if you made up and someone knew you took it out your spouse could still go to jail for being around you even though you asked them. I do believe we are here to protect but one must obtain information about what type of actions to take against another. We are also governed by rules and laws that most private citizens do not know about.

NSA tracks online habits
I don't know if this has been posted before or debunked, but here's an interesting article on how to find out if the NSA *may* be receiving details of your online browsing habits. I tried it on my computer and got some att.net's in Chicago and Indiana. There's no way to know if the routes are being shared with the NSA, but we all know AT&T's stance on privacy, and their relationship to the NSA wiretaps, etc.
I wonder if anyone else has any more information regarding the issues in this article?

Re: Facial I.D. Tech
From the Desertnews.com article listed below: "Simon Davies, director of Privacy International, said, "When People place their photographs on the Internet, they do not expect them to be searchable.""
... WHAT? Perhaps Mr. Davies was tired when he said this. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was... This statement is a determent to privacy advocates and private people. The RULE is; If you upload it to the Internet, you MEAN for the WORLD to view and analyze it. All informed, modern people realize this. To think you can upload ANYTHING to ANY website, chat room, or message board on the Internet and NOT have it indexed and searchable is immature, fanciful, wishful thinking. The Internet is a WORLDWIDE BILLBOARD!! If people don't understand this by now, their families should take away their driving license.

FBI can hijack any recently manufactured cell phone
A recent court ruling in a case against the Genovese crime family revealed that the FBI has the ability from a remote location to activate a cell phone and turn its microphone into a listening device that transmits to an FBI listening post, a method known as a "roving bug." Experts say the only way to defeat it is to remove the cell phone battery.

From what I have been told, it doesn't matter how old the phone is when turning on your microphone.
The "Free Space" transmitter works anyway.
Some "geeks" already know how to do this without warrants (and have for the past 50 years). It doesn't have to be a cell phone. Landlines are tapped this
way too.

Peter's question
Tell Peter to look in the phone book and internet for "virtual office's" or something similar. There are offices in all mid size and major cities that you pay a monthly fee to use certain services of the office (mail receiving and forwarding, conference rooms for meetings, office space for part time use, secretarial services, etc). They are used by many small business owners as a place to meet with clients, have office space to work as needed, mail receiving, etc. Totally legit and sounds more like what he may be looking for.

Regarding iCall
I just tried it, it's bad quality. Many people on their support board don't like it either. But it did lead my to Free Call, which is just like skype so far, except no conference call. It does have free international calls to many areas and quality is as good as skype IMO. You can dial land line phones up to 300 minutes per week.

mailbox rental
Hello,
I would like to give a MAILBOX address as a home address for my credit cards. MAILBOXES ETC, USPS, UPS MAILBOX rental is no good because the following would show on my credit report: "Notice: This address may be perceived as high risk since it is a non-residential address, POSSIBLE MAIL DROP!"
...
The perfect solution would be renting a MAILBOX at a little office like Notary Public or Accounting office. Does anyone know any possibilities to rent such a MAILBOX in New York City, Brooklyn, Bronx or Quince. Could anyone help please?

Yes, it is OK to use a Canary Islands address for the trust's mailing address. However, make it plain that the trust is formed and will be administered by WA law.

How can I overcome the fear of starting?
WELL I have started my own internet business which is doing OK....MY DAD has always been self employed and has done OK..My Dad and I have always had the same opinion of why we hate working for others BECAUSE WHEN YOU WORK FOR SOMEONE ELSE YOUR WORKING TO MAKE THEM RICHER IT HAS TO BE THAT way it would be if I owned a business. I HAVE BOUGHT AND SOLD FURNITURE WHICH DID EXCELLENT but quit once competition came...WELL TO THE QUESTION I'm thinking of starting another business FIXING people's computers, maybe advertising in the paper and going out to their house. I CAN'T fix everything BUT I CAN FIX ALOT of computer problems hence ALOT OF EXPERIENCE I have been paid out of kindness for previous jobs with computers....I WOULD LIKE TO START that job and in my offer will include will be IF I CAN'T fix it my visit was free I was even thinking of talking to other computer places maybe working out a deal so I would get card to give to my custumers who's computer I could not fix....My question is WHAT CAN I DO TO GET STATED AND DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS...MY SECOND QUESTION IS I HAVE A FEAR OF STARTING STUFF LIKE THIS, YOU KNOW? LIKE I WILL END UP EMBARRASSED OR SOMETHING HOW CAN I OVERCOME THAT?

Hey, Austin, easy on the capital letters, OK? How far are you willing to travel? Helena? Great Falls? Kalispell? Maybe Billings once a month? If so, get a free ad in at craiglist.org. The Montana page covers the whole state, so list how far you will travel.
... As for the second question, the answer is just to plow ahead and not listen to the critics. If you fall down, just get back up. Again and again and again. Did I fail when young? Lots of times! (Not to mention getting fired four times, before starting self-employment.)
... I assume you already have the Skip College e-book, right? Memorize the parts about finding a niche, fast response, keeping your word, and going the extra mile.

Free phone calls like skype
So Skype ended their free phone call trial. Pfft, no problem! iCall gives you free incoming and outgoing call anywhere in the US and Canada. All you need to do is download the software and a mic. Whats interesting with this free service is that you can have incoming calls (unlike Skype free service). How you do this is give people give one of icall access number (available for all states and in Canada) and your personal extension number where they could reach you. Give it a try, its a good CHEAP alternative to a cell phone :)

Moving and getting a P.O.box for privacy.
I am moving and I thought this is a great opportunity to get a P.O box at a private mom and Pop P.O.place. My wife never liked the idea of getting a private box after I read your book - but now moving has given me an opportunity to do so.
What should be my next goal as far as protecting my privacy?
I thought a few options is to change my DMV address to reflect my P.O. Box, the Mom and Pop place said I could write their address and put apt number for whatever box number I have. That would work. I can tried that. What would you be a logical next step?

If you get the CMRA Box using your present or previous address, then that's great. I cannot answer the question of future goals because I have no idea of your circumstances nor what else you have done so far.

Re: Patrick from Skokie
Hi JJ,
Something for your readers who are considering starting a business or 'looking for a job':
A friend of mine recently had an experience similar to Patrick's, regarding the online job application and background investigation authorization (ChoicePoint, HireRight, etc.), although their story went beyond just providing your data to information aggregates.
These aggregator companies actually sold/reported information to the various companies she listed. This resulted in an increase to her car insurance rate, even though it was a minor traffic violation that was resolved in court almost two years ago.
To top it all off, the hiring company completely ignored her after it was determined that she was 'ineligible for hire', because of her driving record. She applied for a position that did not require any driving at all.
Even if you do not have a driving or criminal record, you can imagine how quickly your information would be relayed out to the World if you applied to several different jobs. Where that information will end up? Who will be looking at it and what consequences can come from it?!
Josh, , Age: 32

ABC pagers is wrong -- 2-way pagers can be tracked. However, a warrant or a subpoena is required. Nevertheless, they are sometimes tracked illegally, if someone is really out to get you.

Scroogle
John from Midland and others may like to know about Scroogle. It basically lets you use google anonymously although it doesn't have all the google functions. I don't think it's offshore, but they do seem to get the anti-google-cataloging job done. Now if only they had an option for SSL...

Prepaid Cell Phones
I work at [national tech store] and happen to have discovered that Virgin Mobile isn't overly picky or diligent about the information collected for a new account. Also, the phones are some of the cheapest in my store, especially considering the quality. Lastly, if you go to a store in person, you can buy a top up pin, to add money to an account, and such pins have a shelf life of six months. So, you could pick up a handful of unactivated phones, as well as some top up pins (of course spreading the purchases out over different names, locations, and days), pay in cash, and change phones as often as you may need with ease. Considering what an earlier commenter said about ABC pagers, this could prove to be an ideal combination.
By the way, I loved the book, am recommending it to my friends (got it for one as a Christmas present), and am planning a gradual implementation of the suggestions, starting with moving into a new apartment.
Oh, on a note I just remembered. As far as standard post-pay cell phones go, Sprint has a PreCash option that allows you to pay your bill in cash at a participating retail location.

Those from the WWII generation are "maybe" more trustworthy? Are you out of your mind? There is absolutely no doubt they are more trustworthy.
By the way, I turned 32 today.

Possible Perils of renting a room
I feel it's important for folks to at least have an awareness of the possible problems that they can avoid when renting a room for privacy. First of all, only someone that DESPARATELY NEEDS the extra money badly enough rents out a room in their room. If you have a nice car, good job, etc. - you could run into a real problem. I did. In a nutshell, the day before I was leaving, she took everything out of my room (stole approx $1200 worth of stuff) and cleaned it thoroughly so it looked like I had moved out. Then, when I came back that same evening (the next day was move out day), she started yelling and screaming that I was not to come back in the apt, "what are you doing back in here?" - I looked at the room - "Where's my stuff?" - she called the police. The police came, talked to me first, went to talk with her and basically said that since it looks like I moved out, that I'd have to take her to small claims court (loss of all privacy obviously) to get the value back. Thank goodness no laptop, phone, documents, photographs, work materials, etc. were in the room, huh? Mr. Luna, any additional info to add?

Yes. Your experience was extremely unusual, and you should not judge other renters by that one instance. I rented rooms from 1946 - 1951 with never a problem. You don't say how old the woman was who took your things but I suspect she was under 40. Try older widows, especially if they rent more than one room.
... Here's a tip. I cannot prove it, but I believe that the WWII generation is more honest and trustworthy than those born later. When someone in my age group gives me his word, it has always been trustworthy, whereas I just had a bad experience with a man who was 45. Even his signature on a legal document proved to be worthless.

Calling cards and caller ID
I bought a long-distance calling card from the 99 Cents Only Store because of its low price-one cent/minute-and because unlike most calling cards, it has a local access number instead of a toll-free access number. I have caller ID blocking on my home phone and I know that toll-free calls will get my phone number regardless of it. I had to call a toll-free number to get the local access number for the card. I made that call from a pay phone and the calls to the local access number from my home phone. When I went to the card's web site to see the list of numbers I called using the card, I noticed that it also lists the number that placed each call, and there was my home phone number! How did the owner of a local number get my number even though I have caller ID blocking?

This is in reguards to Phillip's Dec 22, 2006 post.
Living in Nebraska the police officers here are also able to access insurance information. This only came to my attention after I recieved a call from a detective because my license plates were used in a burglary. (they had been stolen and placed on an identical vehicle). I asked how the detective got my contact information (the car is registered in the name of a nominee) and she told me through NCIC (Nebraska Crime Information Center) and by calling relatives of mine (IE my father) She told me that the NCIC gave them my name and address and the phone number listed was my father's so they called him (a local Officer as well) he gave them my corect info and they called me. After this insident I asked my father about the specifics and he told me that NCIC was a simple search they used but was "only available to police officers) I don't know if it is availible to PI's here and I doubt my father would know.

Disable RFID chip in Passports

The article doesn't say how to test.

Will, I deleted the article's address, but I will quote one sentence from it: "But be careful -- tampering with a passport is punishable by 25 years in prison." I do not (repeat, NOT) suggest disabling the RFID chip. At the very least, this will cause you trouble every time you leave or enter the country. If you are worried about other than customs, why not just carry your passport wrapped in tinfoil?

Voice over IP instead of regular phone service.
I read your book and thanks for writing
it.
I figure you would know someone who would be able to comment on this.
What do you know about using VOIP (Voice over IP) internet phone service for making
and receiving calls?
There are services that you can:
1 - pay in advance for all calls.
2 - have a phone number with ANY area code (with the exception of one state).
3 - make the call appear to originate from ANY phone number you wish on caller id (as you can control caller ID in some services).
4 - 911 service only shows the billing address on VOIP calls.
5 - Your billing address can be anything
that matches your credit card info.
6 - You can have the phone service forward to ANY number you wish if you are not online or go straight to Voicemail.
7 - It's possible to add encryption to the call (via vpn tunnel or at the
voice call itself much like a Military STU III phone) but requires a bit
more knowledge to do.
The only drawback I would see would be
the requirement for an internet connection which COULD be traced unless
you make a call through a free access wireless internet connection.
Any thoughts?

How to keep your name private?
How do you keep your name private if you register a property in an LLC and the mortgage is in your name? I know someone who transfered a property to an LLC, but the mortgage still remains in their name. Won't this person be liable personally in case he is sued by a tenant or someone? (and you can only get a mortgage with a personal quarantee with your name on it)

Apparently you have not yet read "How to Be Invisible." If you had, you would know that I never, ever recommend borrowing money to buy a home or a car. If you cannot afford to pay cash, RENT. In fact, renting is not only cheaper, it allows you to be able to move away on a very short notice.
... FYI, we were in our 60s before we bought our first home, and then only because we could easily afford to pay cash. Before that, we always rented.
... As to your question: An LLC will not help you to keep your identity private, if you get a mortgage.

Hiding money; accepting money orders
I was wondering, and maybe you've touched on this before. I've got several things laying around the house, Mostly electronic/computer related things that could get at least a decent amount of money.
My question is, outside of dealing with cash, is it problematic keeping the money that I get from the sale hidden? Selling over the internet for example, if I asked the person to pay me via money order, and if I were to take that to a bank or something I assume I have to show ID, and ultimatly is that going to be tracked somehow?
Mike, , Age: 31

Pagers
Just a note about pagers. I recently got one through ABC Beepers. One can use a Visa gift card which can be obtained anonymously and ship it to your ghost address. No problems, no credit checks, no ID checks. I simply pay for a year's service up front. You can "register" on their site using a free bogus email address and pay for future service.

Window tinting
Regarding window tinting of cars- most states have laws on the allowable darkness of the tint for the windows in various parts of the car. If one desires darker tint for privacy/security reasons, there are several legal ways to do so:
1. Most states allow darker tint if you have a note from a doctor stating it is required because you have a "sensitivity" to light or something similar. You either keep the note with you when driving to show if stopped or go to the DMV and they enter the info into their system. Depends on the state. I have friends that use this tactic to legally have darker tint on their cars.
2. Some states exempt cars registered as "executive sedans" or some other similar term from the tint laws. I think a bonus to this is you could register the "executive sedan" under the LLC and it would be even less suspicious since a business (i.e. NM LLC) would register "executive sedans" as normal practice.

I would not have a car that had a tinted front window that hid the driver. For one thing, that alone can cause a cop to pull you over. For another, I want to be seen when I signal others, such as to have them pull out ahead of me. Or when I wave to friends on the street.

Yes. In fact, for RENTAL properties, where there is always the chance you may be in court to sue or be sued, I suggest you use a California LLC. True, that takes away your privacy and is also expensive, but gives you better protection.

Insurance information and Law Enforcement
Hi Mr. Luna,
I am a former member of the Georgia State Patrol. In Georgia, the insurance information is available to law enforcement when the tag (10-28) is checked via GCIC (Georgia Crime Information Center). So I respectfully disagree with what you wrote to Joe in the "LLC auto insurance" post, "When the police or a PI check the plate, your name does not show up." I can't say for Texas, but for Georgia only. Thanks for the opportunity to post here.

OK, Phillip, I stand corrected as to (1) Georgia, and (2) the police in that state. (You do not say whether a PI could access insurance information.) Although I will not go into detail, I happen to know that in certain other states, when the police run a plate in a routine way, the name of the insured does not come up. If any other readers have further information on this, I would appreciate hearing from them.

USA bank accounts for Canadians
A friend of mine from the States bought your Canadian Bank Report last spring. He just opened an account here at the [name deleted] bank and it only took about 30 minutes. No problem at all, but now I wonder if the reverse is true. Can the average Canadian open an account in the U.S. with no problem?

Although I think so, I have a sign over my computer that says in big red letters, NEVER ASSUME. So here's a request to you Canadian viewers:
Have you ever opened an account south of the border? If so, how difficult was it?
